Originally conceived as a vehicle to explore the music of the Touareg (nomadic peoples of the Western Sahara), Chik Chak ultimately became something more of pure invention than faithful ethnomusicological representation. Marked by linear harmonies and unusual textures, Chik Chak is as much an ode to several of my idols of modern jazz (Wayne Shorter, Maria Schneider, to name a few) as it is to the Touareg. In the end, the piece became like its title: a delightfully fabricated take on the outside world
