about

The Search is the end result of a project conducted by the graduate students of the University of Miami's Studio/Jazz Writing program to compose for a combination of jazz and classical players. Every year, the ensemble consists of a different mix of instruments. For 2009, the group was comprised of three classical woodwinds, four jazz winds/brass, a jazz rhythm section and a classical mallet percussionist. Everyone approached the project differently, and collectively we really got a kick out of exploring the diverse sonic possibilities that exist when you break out of traditional jazz instrumentation.

As head of the renowned Studio/Jazz Writing program at the University of Miami, Prof. Gary Lindsay founded the UM Recording Ensemble as an opportunity for his composition students to explore instrumental combinations not typically heard in the jazz world. The ensemble convenes for one semester during each academic year. Students are responsible for composing for the group, as well as rehearsing, conducting, recording the group, and mixing and mastering their projects.

Enjoy!!!
